GPS Integration and Smartabase

  • On November 30, 2016
The information from GPS tracking is a critical source of information for monitoring physical load in many sports. The big challenge however is to be able to combine this valuable information with other information such as wellness, other forms of training load (e.g. strength training), nutrition, recovery and injury management.

Smartabase integrates with a wide range of GPS technologies so the task of importing and combining GPS data with all other areas has been made incredibly simple.

Which GPS Devices Does Smartabase Support?

Whilst Smartabase can accept data from any GPS system on the market, key organizations we integrate with include GPSports, Catapult, Statsports and VX Sport GPS systems. In addition to GPS there are other tracking devices that can provide similar data points on load monitoring, distance and speed – depending on what you already have or need. Some of these integrations include Zebra RFID technology, Kinexon, Second Spectrum and more. To view all our integration partners, click here.

How Does GPS Integration Work with Smartabase?

One of the biggest challenges for any high performance team is keeping data up-to-date in their Athlete Management System. For many teams, importing GPS data has been a lengthy, manual process of first using the GPS vendor software to download and export the session data, and then having to either manually import that data into your Athlete Management System, or load it into an excel sheet.

Now, thanks to Fusion Sport’s API connections (direct connections from one technology platform to another), all you need to do is perform your normal workflow in the GPS manufacturer’s software and sync the data to their cloud. Smartabase will then automatically pull this information into your data forms and visualizations, where it can be combined with any other data points you’re monitoring  to give you the insights you need.

You don’t even need to open Smartabase for this to happen – the technology does the work for you.

What can Smartabase do with GPS Data?

As soon as your GPS data comes into Smartabase it is instantly processed and transformed in a range of ways – that YOU can configure, control and optimize over time.

Data processing for additional calculations and alerts

Like any other data, the beauty of Smartabase is that you can add a wide range of customized calculations to be used as key indicators in reports and dashboards. You can also set automated SMS and email alerts when you really want to have your finger on the pulse.

  1. Custom combination calculations: you can combine the GPS variables in any way you like. For example, calculate ratios between distance covered in various speed zones, or add multiple speed zones together.
  2. Customizable Historical Calculations: an important way to analyses GPS data is to look at rolling averages and ratios over time. Commonly used examples include rolling totals for each week and month, and ratios such as acute/chronic load, training stress balance and z-scores. Once again these are hugely customizable and run in real-time as soon as the data lands in Smartabase.

These summary reports can be set to email out automatically or have key indicators displayed on your home page with customizable color coding for quick analysis.

Athlete Hubs

Customizable Athlete hubs allow you to to view GPS data alongside other key data metrics such as: RPE, Training Load, Injury Status, Fatigue Analysis variables, Wellness Scores and many more. All reports are updated in real-time, so your staff can receive up-to-date reports as soon as the GPS data lands in SMARTABASE.

Live Excel Reports

Many organizations are reluctant to transition their GPS analysis into an Athlete Management System as they have already developed sophisticated customized reports using Microsoft Excel. Thanks to the SMARTABASE Live Excel Report function, you can continue to use your existing excel reports, but instead have them fully automated. Similar to how we have automated the import of GPS data through the SMARTABASE API, the processed data can be sent back out to Excel completely automatically. You simply open the Excel file, enter your password, and all data is automatically updated.

Interactive Analytics

The release of our new D3 Dashboards module in 2016 now offers an even greater level of customizable data visualization and analytics including extensive player vs. player comparisons, player vs. team comparisons and individual player summaries. A number of off-the-shelf visualizations are at your disposal, offering dynamic filtering, animation and drill down capability then surpasses even the capabilities of Excel. And like all things SMARTABASE, these templates can then be customized to your exact liking.
