Introduction

Since 2013, the AIS has successfully transformed their culture around data and outcomes for athletes, especially in the prevention of injuries. Across the board they’ve seen a 30-40% decrease in injuries, with some squads as high as 90% down in injuries annually. Learn how the AIS transformed their data culture and reduced injuries through the implementation of a nationwide Athlete Management System.

SUMMARY

In March 2013, after an extensive 12-month tender process, Fusion Sport was awarded a 4 (+3) year contract to deliver a centralized Athlete Management System for the Australian Institute of Sport.

Based on its early success, the project quickly gained the attention of the State Institute and Academy System (SIS/SAS) network, and the project scope rapidly expanded outside of its original scope as an AIS centric solution.

Five years on, the “AMS” is now a Nationwide solution consisting of seven linked Smartabase sites, selectively and automatically sharing relevant data on athletes across the country and achieving a never before seen level of collaboration between the AIS, SIS/SAS network and National Sporting Organizations (NSOs).

The solution now serves in excess of 1500 staff members and 15,000 athletes across the country and has collected and generated in excess of 3 Billion data points on Australia’s leading and future athletes.

The project has provided a central repository and ‘single source of the truth’ for athlete data, which has fuelled a range of new research and new knowledge in areas such as injury prevention and performance optimization.

IMPLEMENTING A NATION-WIDE DATA MANAGEMENT & ANALYTICS PLATFORM

Implementing a nation-wide data management and analytics platform for injury prevention and performance optimization. With a user base of over 15,000 including athletes, medical staff, coaches, sport scientists, data analysts, high performance managers, and dieticians, the AIS have developed a truly centralized national system, with multiple organizations and locations now collaborating through one unified platform.

DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC USER STORIES: ILLNESS, INJURY & LOAD MANAGEMENT

The Australian Institute of Sport is responsible for leading the delivery of Australia’s international sporting success. An efficient data management system means good communication, so support staff can access and profile an athlete’s status. Smartabase provides the whole picture – so staff know what changes to implement and when.
